What’s the right age for lessons?

Dear Obsessive Mother’s Guide to Parenting,

Can you tell me what the right age is to start lessons, music, swim, sports… etc?  I don’t know what’s too early and just silly to spend money at their age and what’s the perfect time so they are still enthusiastic.  I have a 3 and a 5 year old, both boys.

Thanks

Dear Stacy,

Great question.  The truth is, it’s never too early to start.  Places like the YMCA, Kindermusik, The Little Gym, and My Gym will put kids in the environment of the skill.  At the age of your boys, they will be learning the fundamentals and building a foundation for the concept.  Beginning at this age is also a great chance for them to see what their interests are (and yours).  Some sports require daily practice, long hours, and expensive equipment.  You can compromise between their interests and your availability.

Start early with swimming lessons, particularly with the idea of safety around the water.  Your sons should be able to jump in, turn around, and get out all by themselves, just in case they ever fall in a pool.  I am a HUGE fan of private lessons.  The time is exclusively spent on your child’s needs.  I’ve seen a non-swimmer swim 15 feet on her second day of private lessons.  Granted, not every child will advance like this, but the one-on-one is a good place to start.

Enjoy every minute of their journey!

Sincerely,

The Obsessive Mother’s Guide to Parenting
