Top 5 UNBREAKABLE Rules When Coaching Children

Forest Oaks Tennis Club's lead coach Ken Sjoberg sat down with us at Kidnnected to share his Top 5 UNBREAKABLE rules when coaching children:

1) Dress them appropriately.  Kids experience heat and cold differently from adults.  Think layers, sun protection, and footwear.  Make sure their fabric breathes and that they can easily move about in the clothing.  Most importantly, make sure they have sun block on when playing outside for any extended period of time.  According to, “One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life.”

2) Children should have had adequate rest, food and hydration.  In our Texas heat, “as a guideline, encourage at least 4 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes, or whenever there’s a break or time-out. Hydration tip: One ounce equals about two ‘sips.’” (from

3) Buy them age appropriate equipment.  Too small or too big can turn into a problem fast when running for the ball or swinging a racket.  Ask for a sales clerk for assistance if you need help with this.  Your local club may have extras and will certainly have good advice.

4) Invite family and friends to join them.  A child will get more enjoyment out of a sport and be more likely to continue with it if the people he loves shares that joy.  Family and friends can also set a good example for your child that:“It’s not how you win or lose, it’s how you play the game”.

5) And have FUN!  The first goal of sports should be FUN, followed by learning teamwork, self-confidence, and getting exercise.
