“Somebody pooped and I think it was you….”

"Somebody pooped and I think it was you…."

Here are the lyrics to one of my parenting secret songs:

"Somebody pooped and I think it was you,
Somebody pooped and I think it was you,
Somebody pooped and I think it was you,
I think it was my baby."

Here's the parenting secret:

From birth, I'd sing this song when I knew it was time to change one of the babies.  I would scoop them up and carry them to the changing table.  I would remove the offensive diaper, clean their behind, and put a nice fresh diaper on.  The baby went from uncomfortable to comfortable, unhappy to happy.

Sometimes I wouldn't be near a changing table though, or driving in the car and unable to pull over right then.  I could hear their cry, smell the "load" and know what they needed.

And so the song would begin.  And MAGIC: the baby would stop crying.  I had conditioned her to know that when that song was being sung to her, her mommy would be changing her diaper very soon.

So simple, just a song.  A song of trust.

Now we sing:

"Everyone out the exit door!
The exit door,
the exit door.
Everyone out the exit door!
It's time to go to school!"

or

"Sock & shoes, I really love to wear socks and shoes,
I really love to wear socks and I love to wear shoes,
I love to wear those socks and shoes, those socks and shoes!"
(to the tune of Heart and Soul)

Just that little touch of music added a smile, a spark, and some trust to our lives.  Give it a try with your little ones!
