Meet Mom-Entrepreneur Michelle and her Whimsical Works

Tell us about your business. What got you started?

My home business is creating decorative pieces that will complement and add a special touch to your home.  I create interesting and unique floral designs such as wreaths, swags, table centerpieces and will custom design to a client’s request.  I’ve also been known to help others with room arrangement using their own furnishings and accessories.  I am beginning to help others with their seasonal decorating needs.

I began as a young girl decorating and rearranging the furniture in my bedroom.  In my early teens, I always had projects going such as needle work, latch hook rugs and felt Christmas ornaments.  Once I had my own home, I started making flower arrangements and decorating for the holidays.  I began to help family & friends decorate their homes.  I realized I love the “hunt” for that perfect piece of furniture.  I am always looking for the next inspiration that will spark a new project.  My inspiration comes in many forms from beautiful color combinations and home accessories to pictures of unique pieces of furniture.  Seasonal decorating is also something I enjoy doing.

Throughout my life, my passion for creating and decorating continues to grow. I feel very blessed to be able to work in an industry that I love and help others with their home decorating needs.

Did you do it to bring in money or as a hobby?

I definitely started this business as a hobby.  My family & friends always loved my work, but I never thought I could actually do this and make money at the same time.  I was encouraged by a few to post some of my work on some of the social media sites such as Woodlands Online and Facebook.  I soon realized that my creations were appealing to the public.  People began inviting me to be a vendor at their schools, church fairs& fundraisers.  It was only then did I think that maybe I can do something I love to do and am passionate about and be able to make money doing it.

Looking back, what was your proudest moment?

My proudest moment was having the courage to leave a secure job and income to become a stay at home mother to my two boys.  Facing an uncertain future can be very intimidating. This is also the case when you decide to start your own business.  There are always the questions; How can I make this work?  Who is going to be interested in my business?  What if I fail? But if I didn’t try, I would never know.I had to go for it.  I continue to give it my all.  I learn as much as I can, and continue to focus on moving forward and making good sound decisions.  It always helps to have good people and friends in your life, supporting you, promoting you and your brand.

How do you balance working from home and your children’s schedule?

I am definitely a “work in progress” balancing our family’s schedule.  It is always an ever changing challenge.  My boys and their activities always come first with me. The moment they walk out the door in the morning, my time to work & create begins.  I try to plan ahead and set daily goals, but I accept that some days will be more productive than others.  I try to remain flexible and always search for patience when things do not go as planned.  I’m not sure I will ever be able to master this balance, but I continue to try.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

My business is very new, and I am looking forward to marketing myself and growing the brand.  I can’t wait to see what I will accomplish. I would like to eventually expand from floral designs and seasonal decorations to selling small, unique specialty pieces of new and refurbished furniture.  I will also provide services such as room arrangement/rearrangement, party planning and decorating.
