Meet Adrienne, Mom Entrepreneur of Adrienne Walker Photography

Tell us about your business…What got you started?

Adrienne Walker Photography specializes in modern natural-light portraiture of newborns, babies, children, families, and high school seniors. My photography style is candid and natural, and with two children of my own, I understand the importance of capturing those special moments. I offer a wide variety of products such as leather albums, accordion books, greeting cards, gallery wrapped canvas, and much more.
My business originally started out as The Adrienne Collection in 2003, selling my knitted baby hats, but I became interested in photography to take better photos of my products to feature on my website. Once I had my children, I started knitting my own photo props and the photography followed. Friends and family talked me into starting a business after their friends and acquaintances started inquiring if I could do photography for them.
Did you do it to bring in money or as a hobby?
Both– After having my two children, I put my knitting business on hold. My husband surprised me with a DSLR camera and a tripod, and so I studied photography in my spare time to take better photographs of my children. People who had seen my work would ask me to do photos of their children and to just name my price. I knew a photography business would allow me the flexibility that I needed as a stay-at-home mommy, and at the same time I could do something I truly loved. I have never looked back!

How do you balance working from home and your children's schedule?
Most of my business activity happens in the evenings when my husband is home to watch the children or when my little ones are napping. Evening just happens to be the best time for the most beautiful outdoor photography, so it works out perfectly.

Looking back, what was your proudest moment?

I offered to do some free photography of a man playing with his two children on the beach during a summer trip to the Oregon coast to practice using a new lens. It turned out that the man had not seen his children in a year and this was a rare visit with them. I was able to capture precious memories for him, and that truly made me happy and proud to have my camera. A wise man once told me: Making other people happy is the secret to one's own happiness. I married that wise man and live by that rule with every photo shoot.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

I would like to start photographing more weddings. I love capturing the natural beauty of emotional moments. The couple can experience the magic of a perfectly captured kiss, the secret smile from the bride to her groom in the aisle, or that one wild move on the dance floor.

What would you like the readers to know about your business?

Adrienne Walker Photography is one-of-a-kind because I hand-knit all the baby/child photo props. Any photo session comes with a free CD of all the photos, so there are no minimum orders. Prices are on my website with detailed descriptions of what you are getting with no hidden fees. I'm always offering specials. Occasionally I'll have mini photography sessions, which are a third of the price of a normal session with the same quality photos and only last 20 minutes instead of 90 minutes.
