Children’s Museum of Houston encourages safety through knowledge in observance of Fire Prevention Week

October 2 – 8

WHAT:         The Children’s Museum of Houston is pumped up about fire and household safety!   In observance of Fire Prevention Week, we will host interactive activities to raise awareness about fire and electricity safety.  Fire Prevention Week falls on Oct. 5 – 11 this year.

WEEKLONG ACTIVITIES:

Smokey The Bear Hats:  Be inspired by Smokey The Bear’s message on how to prevent forest fires and make a hat just like his in EcoStation.

  • Fire Quilling:  Use a 500-year-old technique called “quilling” to create fire themed pictures at Alexander Art Academy.
  • Don’t Be Alarmed!:  Create your own “Operation” game in Inventors’ Workshop.
  • Electric Cornstarch:  Electricity is all around us!  Prove this by making cornstarch jump from a spoon to a balloon at Science Station.
  • What’s a Watt?:  Learn to be more energy efficient after seeing how much watts our appliances use at Science Station.
  • Squishy Circuits:  Try to light an LED with homemade dough and learn about insulators and conductors in Science Station.
  • Story Time – Firefighters!  Speeding! Spraying!  Saving!:  Practice all the moves of a firefighter as you read Patricia Hubbell’s  firefighter adventures at Parent Resource Library.
