YMCA’s Back-To-School Drive

Montgomery County YMCAs Joins YMCA of Greater Houston

Biggest-Ever Back-To-School Drive

More than 35 YMCAs Join Local Schools and Churches to Help Children Make the Grade

The 8th annual YMCA Operation Backpack, Houston's largest school supply drive, is gearing up to help more than 45,000 Houston area children start the school year off right. The YMCA of Greater Houston is mobilizing 36 YMCAs, local churches and other community partners to help collect thousands of backpacks and school supplies for children who might otherwise head back to school unprepared. Since its inception, Operation Backpack has served more than 175,000 children.
This year, beginning July 19th through August 12th, YMCA Operation Backpack will collect brand new backpacks filled with school supplies and distribute them to children in 31 Houston area school districts including Conroe ISD.  The 36 YMCA of Greater Houston facilities throughout the city, including the South Montgomery County YMCAs and the Conroe YMCA, will serve as collection sites for people to drop off backpacks and supplies.
“With the current state of the economy, many parents just don’t have the money to buy the supplies their kids need to start the new school year off right”, said Mark Cochran, Center Executive Director. “Many willing hearts are needed to assist with this project. Your investment provides these children the opportunity to start school with the resources they need to be successful”.
Drop-off locations include all YMCA centers in Conroe, The Woodlands and Magnolia. Collection boxes can also be found at our community partners: Skeeters Mesquite Grill, McAlisters Deli on HWY 242, Maersk Line, The Home Finder Center The Woodlands, Market Street – The Woodlands, Excelerate Energy Corp., and StoneBridge Church. Along with ABC 13 Houston and KSBJ, Shoe Carnival will be participating in Operation Backpack for the 4th consecutive year, collecting backpacks and schools supplies at its store locations throughout the Houston area. Toyota and H-E-B will be collecting at its greater Houston area dealerships and stores. New sponsors for 2012 include The Home Depot and Kidde. If your business or organization would like to be a collection site or make a donation, please contact Roxanne Davis, Community Liaison for the YMCA, 281-681-6723.
The community can make monetary donations to Operation Backpack on-line. Visit to contribute, as well as find additional information, including a suggested list of school supplies and addresses of all collection sites. All collected backpacks and donated school supplies from the Montgomery County areas will be distributed to children in need attending our local schools.  For more information please call 281-367-9622. The locals YMCAs are located at 6145 Shadowbend Place, 8100 Ashlane Way and 6464 Creekside Forest in The Woodlands; 10245 Owen Drive in Conroe; and 36725 FM 1774 in Magnolia.
